Gluten of the Eagle

Of the many hundreds of names for the First Matter, the Gluten of the Eagle is yet another. The raw substance of the first matter has a viscous, slimy, milky hue, like the thickest of dense fogs. Yet, because of the fiery essence within it, it is glittery, iridescent, and sometimes seems aqua-marine. So, other names in this genre for the matter are: the White Eagle, the Eagle-Stone, the Virgin's Milk, the Seed, and the Sperm of the World; hence the title of Roger Bacon's work, The Root of the World. It is “a thick, slimy fatness,” silent and invisible. Yet is it the substrata of the entire physical universe, containing everything within itself. It is the Hidden Universal Semen.

Quite a few physical laboratory alchemists have concluded this Gluten of the Eagle to be a metaphor for physical semen. Semen-like it is, but not of the human body. This misconception has resulted with many physical experiments trotting down some degrading paths, even forming sex cults around the idea. Yet all the masters’ quotations below, from the East and West, make no allusion to that being the case, especially since the sages tell us repeatedly that the matter itself is invisible! Neither the Gluten of the Eagle nor semen solare has anything to do with the physical seed behind the human sex act. Nor is the Eagle metaphor confined to mere European and mid-eastern theaters of esoterica. In the introduction to The Power of Silence, Carlos Castaneda wrote:

"The universe is an infinite agglomeration of energy fields, resembling threads of light. These energy fields, called the Eagle's emanations, radiate from a source of inconceivable proportions metaphorically called the Eagle."1

His sixth book of the series is titled The Eagle's Gift, and in light of this present investigation would be well worth a reader's efforts, as is the whole series. Some readers polarized in western alchemical traditions may be put off by Yaqui Indian sorcery. Yet the teachers of Mexican Indian knowledge agree the term 'sorcery' is the least awkward of a list of inappropriate names for this all consuming Divine Knowledge. Is the European discipline any more accurately descriptive of its content under the phrase 'The Great Work?' While the two disciplines vary in matters of technique apropos their respective environments, many alchemical terms and procedures may well be brought to light by supplemental reading of other esoteric cultures. The Gluten of the White Eagle is a universal image, as is the metaphor Corvus Niger, the Black Raven. The Eagle's emanations contain threads of light due to its fiery essence within the Universal Water. Let us look into more quotations from the Yaqui Sorcery and compare them to European Alchemy. The following are verbatim from Castaneda's seventh work, The Fire From Within, Chapter 3, The Eagle's Emanations:

"...our familiarity with the world we perceive compels us to believe that we are surrounded by objects, existing by themselves, just as we perceive them, whereas, in fact, there is no world of objects, but a universe of the Eagle's emanations."2

"But what's really out there are the Eagle's emanations, fluid, forever in motion, and yet unchanged, eternal."3

"The result (of man's expanding awareness) is a vision of the Eagle's emanations. But there is no Eagle and no Eagle's emanations. What is out there is something that no living creature can grasp."4

"Our luminosity [speaking of our Glass Vessel] is made up of that portion of the Eagle's emanations which is encased in our egg-like cocoon. That particular portion, that handful of emanations that is encased, is what makes us men. To perceive is to match the emanations contained inside our cocoon with those that are outside."5

This last quotation explains the alchemists' admonitions to lose ourselves, “to dissolve and to coagulate,” that is, to blend our 'personal' aura and light with that of the First Matter of the Eagle. Finally, Don Juan Matus explains concerning the Eagle's emanations:

"They are something indescribable. And yet, my personal comment would be to say they are like filaments of light. What's incomprehensible to normal awareness is that the filaments are aware. I can't tell you what that means, because I don't know what I am saying. All I can tell you with my personal comments is that the filaments are aware of themselves, alive and vibrating, that there are so many of them that numbers have no meaning and that each of them is an eternity in itself."6

This in nowise varies with countless descriptions of the First Matter from all the sages and philosophers in all times and climes; that the first-hand knowledge of it, through our inner, 'intuitive sense', is all that is needed for the completion of the Art. Utter surrender of our personal life to the One-Life within is the only prerequisite for coming into that first-hand knowledge. Now compare the similarities with European alchemists:

"Wherefore I say, take only the rose-coloured Blood from the Red Lion and the Gluten from the White Eagle."7

"I bid you take that mystic substance, White Magnesia, and have a care that the Stone be pure and bright. Then place it in its aqueous vessel, and subject it to a gentle heat, until it first becomes black, then again white, then red. When you have done this, God shows you the first substance of the Stone, which is an Eagle-Stone, and known to all men." - Neophides

"The Eagle shall snap up and devour the Lion in this combination. Those that are ignorant of the causes of things may wonder with astonishment when they consider that the world is nothing but a continual Metamorphosis; they may marvel that the seeds of things perfectly digested should end in greatest whiteness. Let the Philosopher imitate Nature in his work."8

The italics in this last quotation are deliberate to emphasize the whiteness of the First Matter as a milky substance. These descriptions of whiteness, viscosity, milky, and slimy have subsequently lead many to believe that this substance is actually human seminal fluid. They seem to conveniently ignore the most important fact, which is that this material is also silent and invisible, and can only be revealed through an inner vision given by God Almighty. The Eagle is always seen 'white' from all disciplines. Finally, the White Eagle is a glue, the Gluten. The One, Radiant, Loving Adhesive holds the entire visible and invisible universe in a solution, a suspension, and adheres all parts of the fabric of existence with every other part. Every point in space is Omniscient and Omnipotent, while the Gluten is Omnipresent.
